Abstract:

Fortifications and the artifacts of war found near the coastal region of Pyla village in Southern Cyprus tell a story of turmoil in the years after the death of Alexander the Great. Near the ancient harbor and astride a vital road between the two ancient cities of Kition and Salamis, the site of Vigla was strategically situated. What role did it play in the conflicts of the area? What can the weapons found there tell us about the people and the place? Dr. Olson interweaves the story of the two-decade long Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project with our understanding of history to illuminate the significance of the fort.
